Our hair is an essential part of our being and one of the first things a person notices about us. Healthy hair boosts your confidence and gives you a sense of self-love that we all need.
Is your hair shiny and vibrant? Maybe it used to be but lately, it is oily and itchy with a strange buildup. Why does my hair feel waxy in the back? Good question, and fortunately, we have the answers.
Here are some of the reasons your hair feels waxy.
Too Much Product
Hair takes a beating because of the different styling and colouring products it is exposed to. We tend to overdo it easily because we are after the perfect look; when we attain it, we need more product to maintain it.
Even when we give our hair a good wash, lots of the water-resistant ingredients stay behind in the back, like:
Sulfates
This gives shampoos their lather and works great for ridding the hair and scalp of dirt and oil. The problem is that it works too well, drying out your hair, and then your body needs to replenish the moisture and tends to overproduce.
Silicones
This is in your conditioners, and when it gets on your scalp, it takes over moisturizing from your natural sebum. Silicone is there to fill in the gaps and pores of the hair to make it look healthier and less tangled, but it then builds up on the scalp, leaving a waxy mess.
If your hair feels like a film on it after you wash it and looks waxy, you have product buildup. Consult with your hair salon for a quick and effective remedy.
Dirty Hair Accessories
We use a lot of implements to primp and prop up our hair, including:
- Scrunchies
- Headbands
- Brushes
- Combes
- Scarves
These may help with your look, but over time they can get dirty because of the oil transfer from your hair. You shower and wash your hair, but unfortunately, you use the same oily accessories again. This gives you that way I haven’t washed my hair in a week look.
Over Washing
When you have a problem like dirty, oily hair, you’d think that washing it away would solve it. The truth is too much washing causes the issue.
Excessive washing strips the hair of oils, leaving your scalp dry. Your super-efficient body then gets a signal to produce more oil to rehydrate the area, and before you know it, you got waxy hair. It’s kind of a chicken and egg dilemma, and you need to get off the cycle for your body to settle down and stop producing too much sebum.
Unhealthy Lifestyle
Our bodies work hard to keep balance, but several factors knock it off. When you are not living optimally, your body leaves clues about your unhealthy lifestyle, including waxy hair.
Take good care of your body because it’s the only one you got. Make sure you:
- Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients
- Get enough quality sleep
- Get moving with some form of moderate exercise
- Reduce stress and practice self-care with yoga, meditation and grounding
When you make these positive changes, you will feel and see them. Your hair will look more vibrant and not have that way of appearance.
Straight Hair
Those with straight hair want curls, and those with curls want it straight. With the right tools, you can switch back and forth between both looks to change your appearance once in a while.
For those with naturally straight hair, wax can be an issue. The natural oils produced in the scalp find an easy path by flowing down straight hair. This is noticeable in the back and at the ends. Unfortunately, straight hair is a blessing and a curse.
Hair Damage
Our hair sits on top of the head and is exposed to much abuse. Everything from sun, wind, water and various toxins and pollutants take their toll, and this environmental damage can lead to waxy and greasy hair.
Wear a head covering in the sun to block excessive UVA and UVB rays. It’s what you do to restore your sun-damaged hair that causes waxy buildup. Salt water and chlorine from swimming also dry out the hair, leading you to put in more clogging products. Hard water also damages hair and leads to waxiness, so it’s best to rinse your hair with a water filter installed on your shower head.
When it comes down to it, the less you do for your hair, the better it will be. Examine these reasons above and see if you are doing anything that negatively affects your hair, causing it to be waxy. Then make positive changes so your hair looks and feels amazing. Save the wax for candle making, and love your beautiful hair!
